City of Auburn, Maine

Fire Chief

The City of Auburn, Maine (population 24,000) seeks an energetic and progressive fire service professional to lead and manage the Auburn Fire Department that consists of a Chief, Deputy Chief, two administrative staff persons, and 60 highly skilled and motivated, professional, full-time firefighters and EMT’s, who annually respond to an average of 3,900 calls for service, has an operational budget of $3.5 million, and operates from one central station and two substations. Auburn, together with the neighboring city of Lewiston, is the second largest metropolitan area in Maine and is conveniently located near the ocean and the mountains. Auburn has a Council/Manager form of government, and the Fire Chief reports directly to the City Manager. The Fire Chief is responsible for the financial and operational performance of the department, which includes, but is not limited to managing, supervising, budgeting, negotiating, planning, organizing, and directing all functions of the department. The successful candidate will convincingly be able to demonstrate these skills, as well as, excellent written and oral skills, relationship building, and interpersonal skills.

Candidates who possess a BA/BS in Fire Science, public administration or a closely related field, have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in a fire/EMS service area, including five years of increasingly responsible command experience arepreferred. Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Fire Chief- City of Gloucester MA

The City of Gloucester MA (approx. pop. 30,000 and 30 sq. miles) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of fire chief (non-civil service). Gloucester is a seaside community approximately 30 miles from Boston. With a central station and 3 substations, the department is staffed by approx. 70 fulltime employees with a budget of $5.4 million. The chief is appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the city council for a 3 yr term. Associate’s degree in a fire science or related field, at least 15 years of firefighting/EMS experience, including 5 years in progressively responsible management positions and minimum rank of deputy chief or higher for 3 years, required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in the skills necessary to successfully lead an urban fire department and be a key member of the City’s management team.
